![]() So 3 trips to Lowe's in less than 14 hours.ĥ.) It would help if you have a partner to assist you. ![]() I also ended up going for a new drill bit, I didn't have any large enough to mount my mustang junkyard seat. So if using Logitech, M6, then find the proper length. And worse than that, the bolts that the instructions specifically said would not have worked because I was using thicker wood. If it wasn't for the Lowe's employees' help during my THREE visits in 14 hours, I never would have known what an M6X1 bolt was (it's the type of bolt that is needed to bolt your wheelbase/pedals/shifter to the wood, well at least my Logitech models). I am very much a novice when it comes to building shit. It's not necessary, but will save you tons of time. But this step is to make sure you have everything that you need before you even make the first cut. If you have excellent blueprints that have measurements and board placement on there, then you could possibly predrill holes since you'll know where you are going to place the boards.Ĥ.) Sorry that these aren't in order. This can be related to step number 1 as well. Not to mention difficult when you are holding the board at the right angle and cant let it down and need to change for the screw driver bit. And having to change out the bits for nearly every 3-5 holes was extremely time consuming. It will greatly speed up your time to completion if you have 2 drills. Also, you must use a smaller diameter for the drill bit than the threads of the screw.ģ.) Continued kinda from number 2. When using wood screws into something that is going to be supporting weight/force, you need to predrill your holes before you screw! If not, you will likely crack the wood. My advice is to visualize the entire process and do a rough sketch with at least rough measurements before you even start.Ģ.) Even though this may be common knowledge for most DIY people, it can't hurt to put it out anyway. Or you may be combining multiple designs in one. So here are some pointers to help someone else prevent my mistakes.ġ.) Having a blueprint with measurements and angles aren't a must, but it would greatly lessen your time guessing, making mistakes, and then having to undue an hour worth of work.multiple times for me.īut the design you want to build from a YouTube tutorial may not lay all that out. It took me almost 14 hours of nonstop work (added my trips to the hardware store in that), and I know it shouldn't have taken this long. Maybe later, but right now I just want to learn the basics, and my table mounted style was not going to cut it. I needed a cockpit, and just couldn't justify a 500 dollar + metal pre-built one, as I'm very new getting into this hobby. I'm posting this for anyone else who has been in my shoes this past week. It was definitely something I've never attempted before. Hopefully we can save others time and money, and also having them experience the nice feeling you get upon completing a project like this. edit- anyone else have things to add/alter, please do so in the comments.
